RY 2023-2024                                                                                          Issue #7
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We are all meant to shine. And as we let our own light shine, we give other people permission to do the same."  - Marianne Williamson

Happy New Year Rotarians!  It's time to SHOW UP AND SHINE!  As we stand at the starting line of a new year, let the timeless wisdom of Marianne Williamson guide us.  Soak in these words of wisdom in print or watch them play out in one of my favorite clips from Coach Carter.  Click HERE to watch.

These words hold a profound truth, especially when we consider their resonance in the hearts of our youth. It is in our interaction with the young minds of our communities that we truly grasp the transformative power of service. I saw this synergy of light and service as the student organization I help lead volunteered at Rotary Lights in Waunakee.  Just like in the film Coach Carter, we must recognize that our potential is not limited by circumstance but boundless in its possibilities.

In the spirit of sharing our light, let us take on the challenges of the New Year with the same vigor and determination as those student athletes in Coach Carter.  As Antwon Tanner says in the clip – "We've got sh#t to do".  As Rotarians, we are not merely bystanders but architects of change. Our communities are our classrooms, and the lessons we teach through our actions echo far beyond our immediate surroundings. Together, let's tackle big projects that address the pressing needs of our communities and our world. As we let our collective light shine, we inspire others to join us in the pursuit of a brighter, more compassionate world. This New Year is an opportunity for Rotarians to reaffirm our commitment to service.  Let's SHOW AND SHINE TOGETHER.

Mental Health Issues for Alzheimer’s Caregiver

My name is Steve Mau and for 12 years I was the primary caregiver for my wife, Margeen.
Margeen and I were married for 54 years and we were very dedicated to each other but the Alzheimer’s took a tremendous toll on both of us.

Stress and anxiety caused many sleepless nights which affected me mentally and physically.  I became very frustrated and at times angry.  Fortunately, I had friends that could provide some relief for short periods of time that gave me some respite from the day-to-day routine.

Scripture and prayer became the source of mental relief because there are not too many people you can call at 2 in the morning. One evening, following a church service, I came to the conclusion that the “burden” of Alzheimer’s was really a “blessing” because I was fulfilling my marriage vow of “for better or worse, in sickness and in health.” This and other spiritual realizations allowed me to continue caring for my wife until two weeks before her passing.

Collaboration between Oregon WI's Interact Club
and Local Police Department
By: Bill Rockwell

On December 10th, the Oregon High School Interact club participated in a very successful first ever collaboration with our local Oregon Police Department. Police Chief Jen Pagenkopf (a Rotary Club of Oregon member) suggested a partnership with the Interact Club in OPD's Pictures with Santa day. Five Oregon High School students came dressed in their festive best to assist spreading joy as "Interact Elves" for Santa and have fun with the starry-eyed little ones. A featured bonus included a chance for participants to meet "Archie" the OPD's four-legged officer.

Oregon Interact students had a blast spreading joy to excited little ones and serving our community. Even Toshi, our Taiwanese exchange student, was in on the act. The Interact club is excited to continue this collaboration next year!

Acknowledging Guest Speakers at Rotary Club Meetings

It's always a nice gesture to present a speaker's token to our guests at Rotary Club meetings, in addition to the standard certificate of appreciation. The Rotary Club of Columbus-Fall River have been presenting gifts like these for a long time. These glass tokens are crafted or adorned with the Rotary mark of excellence.

Club Secretary Henry explained that the practice of giving speakers' gifts has been around for a while now. In 2014, the then-President Van Gysel made the switch from pens to glasses. Although the reason is unknown, it is believed he may have stumbled upon them at a trade show or in a catalog.

No matter the reason or story behind it, showing appreciation is a best practice that Rotary members should strive to emulate. This not only fosters goodwill, but also helps to enhance the public image of Rotary. Who knows, a guest who receives such appreciation may even be interested in joining the organization.
