DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S MESSAGE

Happy New Year Rotarians!

I want to start the New Year with a big thank you ... the first half of the Rotary year has gone by very smoothly and we all have each other to thank for that.  The next six months will determine what kind of overall Rotary year our Clubs and our District will have.  Using my, by now, dated lift-off analogy ... during the holidays we dropped our first stage booster and coasted a little.  Now the second stage has kicked in and our lift-off is accelerating again.  Hold on to your hats and ENJOY everything that the Swiss Army Knife that is Rotary has to offer!  There is so much!  However, if you need a few Rotary resolutions to start out the year here are some ideas:

  • In 2020 resolve to ACT on that Rotary idea that you've had for a while now. Let your club president know that YOU are going to make it happen!  Your club will love you for it!
  • In 2020 resolve to re-energize your club by working with your fellow Rotarians to bring in a big cohort of new club members.  Shake it up a little ... it's a new decade after all!
  • In 2020 resolve to take a your first Rotary Friendship Exchange with a family member or friend.  Been on a Friendship Exchange?  LEAD one to a place you're already passionate about!
  • In 2020 resolve to host an exchange student, convince a student to head overseas for the summer or find a student to take advantage of Rotary's $24,000 full year youth exchange "scholarship"!
  • In 2020 resolve to sign-up for Rotary Direct; help your club and Rotary do more good work at home and around the world!   Rotary Direct Link
  • In 2020 resolve to bring your fellow Rotarians, family and friends to RotaryFest in Fort Atkinson - the District Conference with a Twist!  RotaryFest Registration and Video Link
Thanks for everything you do for Rotary!  Have a great year!

POLIO - THE LATEST FROM SCIENCE MAGAZINE
From Science Magazine "The “endgame” in the decades long campaign to eradicate polio suffered major setbacks in 2019. While the effort lost ground in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which recorded 116 cases of wild polio—four times the number in 2018—an especially alarming situation developed in Africa. In 12 countries, 196 children were paralyzed not by the wild virus, but by a strain derived from a live vaccine that has regained its virulence and ability to spread."  Read More Below.

ROTARY DISASTER RELIEF & TYPHOON PHANFONE
In the September eBulletin I wrote that the The Rotary Foundation had recently established a Rotary Disaster Relief Fund to which all Rotary Districts impacted by a Disaster can apply for Funds.  This includes District 6250 should any of our communities or our region ever face a future Disaster.  Please follow this link for more information and to make a donation.  Rotary Disaster Relief Fund Donation Link

Recently Typhoon PhanFone hit the Philippines including District 3850.  District 3850 is near and dear to many District 6250 Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors who have friends there, have traveled there or who have contributed to projects there.  Rotarian Jim Nelson of the Fort Atkinson Rotary Club has established a fund via our District Charitable Trust specifically to assist with this Disaster.  Read more below.

THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE THAT IS ROTARY ... JUST A FEW EXAMPLES BELOW ... IT'S UP TO YOU TO USE IT!

Sure it's a blurry picture and sure the project didn't raise millions of dollars but Rotarian Karen Dahl of the Viroqua Rotary Club DID travel to Pasadena, DID help decorate the Rotary Rose Parade float, DID attend the Rose Parade Float Committee banquet and DID present RI President Mark Maloney with a Wisconsin shirt and an envelope filled with the names of District 6250 Rotarians who then "rode" on the float with Mark on New Year's Day.  A Rotary idea ACTED on and having fun with the Swiss Army Knife that is Rotary!
