Editor’s Note: This “DID YOU KNOW?” article is designed to help you discover and learn about the rich Rotary International life that happens outside of our individual clubs’ walls. This month’s article is on Rotary International’s Awards.

Rotary International has dozens of awards that our District is allowed to grant on an annual basis. These awards can recognize a club, an individual and even a non-Rotarian. I would love to give out the maximum number of awards in each of these categories.

Additional details of these awards can be found at the following link:
https://www.rotary.org/awards. My hope is that you take the time to think about individuals as well as your club and become inspired to submit a nomination request.

Club Recognition:  There are two main club awards that can be nominated by your club president at any time of the year.
  • Rotary Club Excellence Award – This is the most important award for a Rotary club.
  • Significant Service Award - Recognize a club whose project has addressed a significant need in your community.

Individual Recognition:
  • Service Above Self Award - Nomination must be submitted in October. This prestigious award is for Rotarians who demonstrate their commitment to helping others by volunteering their time and talents.
  • Avenues of Service Award – Can be nominated at both the district and RI level on a year-round basis.
  • Rotary Foundation District Service Award – Nomination is open year-round and ideally comes before our District Conference in April 2025.  This award honors Rotarians who are making a difference through the Foundation’s programs.
  • Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service – Nomination must be submitted in November.  This award honors Rotarians who have been actively involved in service related to The Rotary Foundation.
  • Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award – Nomination must be submitted in January.  This award honors individual Rotarians who have demonstrated exemplary service to the Foundation and have received the Citation for Meritorious Service at least four years prior.

Non-Rotarian Recognition:
  • Rotary Award for Excellence in Service to Humanity – Nomination must be submitted in March 2025.  This award recognizes non-Rotarians, including partners and spouses of Rotarians, who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service through Rotary.
