District Governor's Message

August is Membership Month

Tom Marshall

Mary Kessens

August is the month that is commonly recognized as the month of Membership.  It is nice that it comes early in the Rotary year as it will give many non-Rotarians the opportunity to join the greatest service organization in the world and allow them to enjoy a full year of service.  I often think that we should celebrate Membership every month of the year as there are so many friends, colleagues, family members and neighbors who would really enjoy being asked to join Rotary.

We, as Rotarians, have developed so many projects around the world--whether it is locally in our communities or in another part of the world!  That is absolutely wonderful and we must continue to do so.  However, we need help in accomplishing what we have initiated and the best way to get that help is obtaining new members.  As I travel to the various clubs throughout the district for my official visit, I am encouraging EVERY Rotarian to ask at least one person to consider joining Rotary.  It is a privilege and an honor to be asked to join our program and you will find that it is actually enjoyable to be in a position to give people this wonderful opportunity.  Sometimes, I find that a person whom I might ask, knows nothing or very little about Rotary.  This opens the doors for us to tell that person about all of the wonderful things that we do in this world.  Please ask someone this year and August would be a great month to do so.

Rotary membership in our country is falling and we must do something about that.  We want to continue to be the strongest and most active service club in the world and attracting new members is certainly a step in the right direction.  We want to give others that fantastic opportunity to make our world a better place in which to live.  Lives can be changed for the better through joining our program.  Let's work together to increase our membership!

Have a great Rotary Membership Month!

Tom

Annual Fall Conference for Membership and Foundation Set for November 8th

Mark your calendars and don't miss this free conference in the Wisconsin Dells.  It will start Saturday November 8th at 8:00 am with registration and conclude with lunch so you should be done by 1:30.

This is a good opportunity for both club leaders and new members to learn how the Foundation works, how it has funds available for projects around the world as well as for District and all our 61 Clubs in the District.  PDG Hal Keitel, District Foundation Chair will lead this part of the two part morning.  Richard Kenney, District Membership Chair will lead be responsible for the Membership and Retention part.

The seminar provides helpful information to equip club leaders with the tools and training to motivate club members to support the Rotary Foundation as well as to recruit and retain members.

We have selected the site this year to be the Glacier Canyon Lodge at the Wilderness Resort in the Wisconsin Dells. While the conference facilities provide a private and quiet meeting area, there is a waterpark so it is well suited to bringing the family.

Sleeping room pricing, detailed information and registration will be available shortly at www.rotary6250.org.

Contacts are:
Hal Keitel:  hkeitel@centurytel.net
Richard Kenney:  richardjkenney@yahoo.com;  715-423-0986

Wisconsin Dells Rotary Interact Club Does Much for the Community

The Wisconsin Dells Interact Club--a high school age organization--continues to do great things for the Wisconsin Dells Community.  They began with 15 students from the Dells High School.  Their projects for the first year included making cards for nursing home patients on Thanksgiving and Valentines Day, Christmas caroling to get food donations to give to the local food pantry and also hosting a blood drive at the high school.  They put together a spaghetti dinner as a fund raiser for the club.

Over the past three years, the club has grown to be just under 40 members.  They have recently added another fund raiser to their program and serve beef sandwichs at a Dells festival.  They raised $3000 this past year.

They have recently donated $1300 toward a Rotary sponsored international water project.

In addition to working hard on many projects, they also have fun every time they get together---whetr it's eating pizza or just hanging out!

Kirkland Kettleson, Wisconsin Dells Rotary Club President says, "It's amazing to see how much energy these kids have when it comes to doing something that doesn't necessarly reward them, except for giving them the feeling that they are helping give back to the community and world that they live in.  I think that people everywhere could learn a thing or two about volunteering by watching our kids!"

For more information, contact Kettleson at 608 692 5911 or kirk@c21affiliated.com

Youth Service Award Program - Menomonie Noon Rotary Club

The Menomonie Noon Rotary Club has developed a wonderful way of recognizing outstanding youth volunteer service to their community.  Each year they give out a number of awards to area high school students.

The benefits are wide-reaching in the following ways:

  • The students are rewarded and reinforced for their efforts.

  • The parents are rewarded and reinforced for raising such great kids, who are willing to share their time and talent.

  • Rotary Club members are "lifted" when they hear about the accomplishments of the students; they hear about a committment to service from some unbelievable kids.

  • Good marketing and public relations for the Rotary Club.

  • Good planning for future Rotarians!!

This is an outstanding program and may give other Rotary Clubs throughout the District some ideas about how they can also become better involved with high school age students throughout the community.
