District Governor's Message

Litany Defined - Long lists of the special attributes and venerations of saints.

Mary Kessens

Mary Kessens

As I have visited your clubs and heard your stories of good works, I’ve tried to keep a rough tally of your many wonderful projects and accomplishments. There are so many things to be thankful for and proud of in our district!

In my message this month I have created a litany of some special happenings in our district.

Click on the headlines below to read more about these great accomplishments:

- 20 Clubs in District 6250 Receive Presidential Citations at District Conference

- Jim Raymond and Alan Selene Receive the Distinguished Service Above Self Award

- Six Paul Harris Fellow Pins Awarded at District Conference

Please take a moment to read my full report and give proper recognition to the incredible club accomplishments, enhanced leadership training and greatness within our District!

WOW, What a Conference!

I would also like to thank our Conference Committee leaders led by Roxanne Brazeau as Conference Chair. Deb Dieter, Ann Kale, Dean Veneman, Mary Beth Growney-Selene, Bob Boelter, John Olsen and Toni Pabon were instrumental along with countless volunteers in making this year's event a success. Please take a look at some of the images from the conference.

And, The Rotary Year Isn’t Over Yet……

We still have two months left of our Rotary Year and I know many of you are still working on your club’s membership growth and Rotary Foundation donation goals. Take time to review the Monthly Membership and Attendance Report on the website. The District Membership Committee asks that your club secretary provide an accurate membership number in the next two months as we strive to reach our goal of net one new member growth in each club. You may be hearing from the Membership Committee by email and phone as we strive to reach this goal by year end.

Also, take some time to review the Club Foundation Goal Report. The District Foundation Committee would like to help you in accurately sending in any donations collected to date and helping your club achieve the Every Member Every Year Goal for donations to the Annual Programs Fund of The Rotary Foundation. We have collected 54% of our goal. We know that many clubs send in their contributions towards the end of the Rotary Year. Please consider sending in your collections as soon as possible so that we can track our collection successes. You may be hearing from The Foundation Committee members to learn of your progress. Remember that donations to the Rotary Foundation allow us to provide District Simplified Grants, Matching Grants and Ambassadorial Scholarships. The amount we can allocate for these programs is in direct proportion to the donations of District 6250 Rotarians.

Best Wishes in Rotary,

Mary

RI-CAS and RI-DAS No Longer Supported as of December 31, 2008.

Statement from Rotary International - When RI purchased the Clubmate application in August 2003 and re-branded it as Rotary International Club Administration Software (RI-CAS) and Rotary International District Administration Software (RI-DAS), the intention was to provide Rotary clubs and districts with an administrative tool that would eventually integrate with RI 's online services, such as the Member Access Portal (MAP).

Since then, however, it has become clear that supporting and developing RI-CAS/DAS is diverting key resources away from other technology projects critical to the infrastructure and future direction of Rotary International. In addition, RI-CAS and RI-DAS are still only being used by a very low percentage of clubs and districts around the world, making continued support of the software even less cost-effective.

Therefore, in order to re-direct resources to more critical projects, such as a long-overdue upgrade to our membership database and enhancements to the Member Access Portal, RI will no longer distribute or support RI-CAS and RI-DAS as of 31 December 2008.

New Fellowship Application Options

The Rotary Foundation is pleased to announce the integration of its peace education initiatives.  Rotary’s World Peace Fellowships for master’s degree and professional development certificate study have been consolidated into one program.  This change allows applicants to apply simultaneously for both options by including all seven Rotary Centers below in their preferencing options:

  • Rotary Center at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand (professional development certificate)

  • Rotary Center at Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA (master’s degree)

  • Rotary Center at International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan (master’s degree)

  • Rotary Center at Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina (master’s degree)

  • Rotary Center at the University of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England (master’s degree)

  • Rotary Center at the University of California, Berkeley, USA (master’s degree program

  • Rotary Center at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia (master’s degree)

Part of this integration is the adjustment of the application and selection schedule for the professional development option.  The Rotary Center at Chulalongkorn University will continue to offer two sessions of training each year from January-April and June-August.  Applications for both sessions will now be due at the same time as applications for the master’s degree option on 1 July with selection taking place one time each year for the master’s degree fellows as well as both sessions of professional development fellows.

More integration news will be released as it becomes available, along with new application forms and promotional materials.  Applicants should continue to use existing application forms until these new items are finalized.

Action Alert! - Attention All Club Presidents and Secretaries

The Rotary Year is fast winding down and the district is lagging in getting the Annual Programs (EREY) donations sent in to the R.I. Foundation. All contributions must be received at the foundation by June 30 th in order for the credit to be posted in this year, 2007-2008. What is sent in this year will determine what is available to the district for simplified and matching grants in three years.

District Training Seminars Completed

All three of our training seminars have now been completed and the participation of our President-Elects, Secretaries, Treasurers, Assistant Governors, Committee Chairs and many other Rotarians from throughout the District was simply outstanding!

The District Team Training Seminar, President Elects Training Seminar (PETS) and Assembly all provided excellent information to those in attendance! We are truly blessed to have very talented and knowledgeable Rotary leaders in our District who provided much information throughout the three sessions. A huge amount of gratitude goes out to everyone who chaired sessions, provided leadership and did so very much to organize everything.

A very special note of thanks goes to our All-World (in my opinion) Training Committee-----Darla Leick (Marshfield Sunrise Rotary), Jim Crubaugh (Tomah Rotary) and Brad Quarberg (La Crosse Valley View Rotary)!! Their hardwork, dedication and generosity with their time and talents, made everything happen!! Thank you very much!

Thanks again to everyone who attended and I look forward to a wonderful 2008 - 2009 Rotary year!!

MAKE DREAMS REAL!!!!

Looking for New Ideas? - Rotarians Helping Rotarians

Is this you?

"Help! My club has been doing the same fundraiser for the last few years and since we are seeing a decline in the amount of money raised, I think it is time for a change. Any ideas? "

Or

"Our club wants to do a new service project, any ideas for us?"

Sometimes it can be frustrating to start a new local or international service project, feeling like you aren’t sure how it will work; or knowing that it is time for your club to create a new fundraiser, but just not sure where to get a new idea.

It was for these reasons that Rotarians Helping Rotarians was created! This project was a simple information gathering endeavor to help all Rotarians and clubs in our district. During PETS, the Presidents Elect were asked to complete a form noting what their clubs do for service projects and fundraisers. This information was then compiled and is made available to everyone in our district via our website! These simple spreadsheets give you information regarding all of the local and international service projects, and all of the fundraisers that are currently being conducted in our district.

Click here to view the results spreadsheet.

Rotary Shares is the theme for the 2007-08 Rotary year and Make Dreams Real is the theme for 1008-09 Rotary year. Rotarians helping Rotarians allows each of us to contact a member of another club for information regarding a project or fundraiser our clubs might be interested in replicating. This allows us to be available to our fellow Rotarians to “share” so we can all work together to “make dreams real”.

Bring a Book to the Convention in LA - Rotary's Wide World of Books Campaign

President Wilkinson encourages Rotary Clubs around the world to support projects that improve literacy rates.

Every Rotarian attending the LA2008 Convention is being asked to donate one or more books to the ROTARY’S WIDE WORLD OF BOOKS, which will then be distribute by Reading by 9 to public elementary schools in Southern California and Nevada.  Please bring books for kindergarten through third-grade only.  Any language is welcome!  Also, you can insert a personal note with the name of your Rotary Club

All the books collected will be in display in a mountain of books, at the entrance to the LA Convention Center.  We expect so many books that we approached the Guinness Organization in London and applied for and got accepted to set the Guinness World Record. A representative of the Guinness Organization will be present in Los Angeles to certify this world record, which will get Rotary into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Guidelines for Use of Rotary Trademarks

The following announcement and request has been made by the Rotary International staff to your District Governor.  Please review the following regarding Rotary project and foundation names.

Dear District Governor,
I am one of the staff contacts at Rotary International for questions related to the use of Rotary International’s trademarks (“Rotary Marks”). The protection of RI's widely recognized trademarks is a particular focus of our department.  Our goal is to ensure that the public always associates the Rotary Marks with the humanitarian and volunteer efforts of the Rotary clubs around the world.

We are writing to request your assistance in ensuring that clubs use the "Rotary" name in connection with club or district foundations in compliance with the guidelines set forth by the Rotary International Board of Directors and the Bylaws of Rotary International.

RI appreciates the time and effort clubs and districts expend fundraising for The Rotary Foundation and club and district foundations. Please know RI greatly appreciates the work of your district and the clubs within your district and wishes you continued success in all your Rotary endeavors.

As you may already know, per RI Board guidelines, a Rotary club or group of clubs may use the name “Rotary” in connection with club or district foundation activities, provided it adheres to the following rules:

1. such use relates the activity to the club or clubs concerned and not to RI;

2. the word "international" is not used in connection with or in the name of a club or district foundation activity;

3. the name of the club or district foundation activity begins with the name of the club or the district designation;

4. the words "Rotary" and "foundation," when used in connection with a club or district foundation activity, be separated in the name of the activity;

For your reference this RI policy is set forth in Section 33.020.5 of the Rotary Code of Policies and can be also found in the Manual of Procedure 2007, Chapter 17.

The names we have on record for some of the foundations within your district do not include a separation between the words “Rotary” and “Foundation.” Additionally, some of the foundations include the word “international.” By following RI policy, a club or district foundation will be clearly identified as an activity of the Rotary club or district.

We kindly ask that you forward the information contained in this email to the club leaders and other interested Rotarians within your district. We, also, kindly request that any foundation names not in compliance with RI policy be modified appropriately.

We thank you for your assistance. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Kind regards,
Angela Baluk

The Rotary Foundation Global Contribution Form Update

The setting of the club foundation goal, and the collection of the monies, are important but if the reporting of the contribution to the Rotary Foundation is not done correctly the miscommunication can prove very frustrating. Contributions should always be sent with form 123 EN, the TRF Global Contribution Form. Contributions, and the donors, are recorded in blocks I. and II. on the form. Care should be taken in designating which of the foundation funds should be credited. For example: If you are sending members contributions for Annual Programs (EREY), you would designate, “Annual Programs Fund”. If the contributions are for other than Annual Programs, for example, monies collected for the “Polio Plus Fund”, then obviously you would check that designation. If you are using a club check to cover several contributions, you may create a list and attach it to the TRF form but the list must include all of the contributor information which would be provided were you to send a TRF Form for each one. Failure to identify the contributor correctly will result in the individual not receiving credit. If you have questions on any aspect of this, the District Foundation Chair, PDG Hal Keitel, or Annual Programs Chair, DGN Dean Dickinson, are available to assist or answer any questions.
