Breathe a Song
The theme for the District Conference is “Breathe a Song”. It derives from the poem by
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, “The Arrow and the Song” .
I shot an arrow into the air, - It fell to earth, I knew not where;
for, so swiftly it flew, the sight - Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air, - It fell to earth, I knew not where;
for who has sight so keen and strong, - That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak - I found the arrow, still unbroke;
and the song, from beginning to end, - I found again in the heart of a friend.
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
This poem has significant meaning for those of us in Rotary. Arrows… and bullets and bombs do not bring a lasting peace. It is the “song of service” that Rotarians sing, that enters into the hearts and minds of those we serve, that will secure for ourselves and our children’s children, the promise of a more just and peaceful world. Our conference is dedicated to that song of service that brings hope where there is none, that changes and saves lives, that makes a difference.
I want to extend to each of you a most cordial invitation to come to the district conference. THERE IS NO REGISTRATION FEE. You only purchase the meals that you want. So, please consider bringing your non-Rotarian spouse. Join the chorus as we celebrate, educate and motivate ourselves to greater service in Rotary.
